Press Statement on the sudden demise of the UNDOF HoM/FC Major General Francis Vib-Sanziri
The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force in Golan Heights announces with the deepest sadness of the tragic demise of the Head of Mission and Force Commander of UNDOF, Major General Francis Vib-Sanziri of Ghana on Friday,19 April 2019 in Israel.
Major General Francis Vib-Sanziri was appointed the Head of Mission/Force Commander of UNDOF on 22 October 2017. He was born in 1957 and enrolled into the Ghanaian Armed Forces in 1985. His extensive peacekeeping experience included deployments to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in 1988 and 1991, United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda (UNAMIR) in 1993 and 1994 and the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) in 2007. He also served with the Economic Community of West Africa States Monitoring Group in Liberia in 1990, in Sierra Leone in 1999 and 2000, and subsequently with the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL). From 2011 to 2014, he served as a strategic military planner in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations in the United Nations.
Major General Francis Vib-Sanziri who worked tirelessly to accomplish the mission mandate played a key role in the incremental return to Bravo Side and the historical reopening of the Bravo Charlie and Alpha Gates. His leadership, dedication and enthusiasm were invaluable in commanding UNDOF under difficult and complex circumstances. His unexpected death leaves us all disheartened, and we offer our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the Government of Ghana for this tragic loss.
