UNDOF Inaugurates Renovated Schools under Quick Impact Projects in Quneitra Governorate
As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting local communities through Quick Impact Projects (QIPs), the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) recently completed the renovation of three schools in Quneitra Governorate, Syria. These schools located in the villages of Al Hanoot, Saida and Ain Frikha were officially inaugurated on 29 May 2025. The ceremony was led by the Head of Mission and Force Commander of UNDOF, Major General Anita Asmah, and attended by representatives from the Syrian Ministry of Education and the Department of Education of Quneitra Governorate.
These three schools were among five QIPs approved by UNDOF in the previous year. The overall QIP package included four schools (with two grouped under one project), one medical centre and six transformers for a water well. In February 2025, one school and the medical centre in Jubata Al Khashab, along with the transformers, were successfully handed over to local authorities. The remaining three schools in Quneitra Governorate were prioritized for renovation due to their significantly deteriorated condition, as identified by the Project Review Committee. The buildings had suffered structural damage such as broken windows, malfunctioning doors, damaged fences and faulty electrical systems. Renovation works included full refurbishment of internal and external walls, replacement and maintenance of windows and doors, electrical repairs, restoration of desks and wallboards, establishment of nursery facilities and improvements to sanitation infrastructure including sewage lines and toilets. The school in Al Honoot consists of two buildings, Saida comprises three and Ain Frikha features a two-storey building. These efforts aim to create a safer, more conducive learning environment for Syrian children and demonstrate UNDOF’s broader commitment to community support and regional stability.
