During the ceremony, UNDOF Force Commander Lieutenant General Ishwar Hamal, Chief Mission Support Bernard Lee, and Deputy Force Commander Brigadier General Anita Asmah lay a wreath at the Peacekeepers Memorial to honor the more than 4,000 women and men who since 1948 have lost their lives while serving under the blue flag. A small gallery of the ceremony can be found here.
During the Ceremony, the Force Commander Hamal also addressed the attendees and highlighted this year's International Day of UN Peacekeepers theme “The road to a lasting peace: Leveraging the power of youth for peace and security,” by praising the young peacekeepers who are playing a major role in helping the missions to implement their mandated activities. He also expressed his sincerest appreciation to the Contingents of Bhutan, Czech Republic, Fiji, Ghana, India, Ireland, Nepal, the Netherlands, and Uruguay for their contributions and the commitment strongly undertaken towards the deployment of military personnel in UNDOF. At the end of his speech, he again paid his tribute to all 62 fallen peacekeepers who laid down their lives for this revered cause maintaining peace on the Golan.
